We stock and install CWS-compatible window replacements across Jacksonville, with most full-frame swaps running $850 to $1,400 per opening installed, depending on size, glass package, and whether the existing frame is salvageable. Sash-only replacements typically run $400 to $700 per opening. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a window that suddenly won’t lock, a draft that wasn’t there last winter, or condensation fogging between the panes that no amount of wiping clears.
Keith Yamada has worked with CWS products long enough to know their quirks, including the coastal-specific issues we see in Jacksonville’s salt air. Lightwell Windows Jacksonville is an independent service provider, not affiliated with CWS, which means we match the replacement to your window rather than pushing whatever is easiest to order.
Which CWS Models This Applies To
CWS manufactures several distinct product lines, and not every replacement part crosses between them. The most common in Jacksonville homes are the CWS 5500 Series, 8000 Series, and the impact-rated CWS 9500 line found in homes built after the 2001 Florida Building Code updates. If you live in a home along the St. Johns River or near the beaches, the 9500 or a comparable impact-rated replacement is likely what your windows carry, and that matters when matching glass thickness and frame depth.
To identify what you have, look for the AAMA sticker on the interior frame edge, usually on the upper sash rail or the head jamb. The sticker lists the series number, glass make-up, and the Florida product approval number, which tells us exactly what we are replacing. If the sticker has faded or been painted over, we measure the frame pocket depth and glass thickness on site. A 5500 Series frame is narrower than an 8000, and the sash balances are not interchangeable. That is the most common compatibility mistake we see from handymen who swap parts by eye instead of by spec.
For CWS products specifically, we stock OEM balances, pivot bars, and tilt latches for the 5500 and 8000 lines, and order OEM or AAMA-rated aftermarket equivalents for the 9500 against its Florida product approval number. We also stock quality aftermarket hardware from Gordon and SWISCO where the OEM part has been discontinued, which happens more often than you would expect on older CWS frames.

Signs Your CWS Window Replacement Is Failing
- Cloudy or fogged glass between panes: The insulated glass unit seal has failed. Once the seal goes, humid Florida air gets inside the unit and nothing short of replacing the IGU or sash restores the clarity. In Jacksonville’s humidity, this failure shows up faster than in drier climates.
- The window won’t stay up or drops when released: CWS sash balances lose tension over time, especially in rooms with direct afternoon sun where heat accelerates spring fatigue. If one side fails, the sash cocks and the tilt latches bind.
- You can jiggle the sash and feel it rattle in the frame: Worn pivot bars or cracked tilt latch housings let the sash move where it should not. Left alone, the movement wears the frame pocket down and turns a $40 hardware fix into a full sash replacement.
- Water stains on the interior sill or wall below the window: This is often a weeping system failure in the frame, not the glass. CWS frames rely on drainage channels that clog with pollen and salt grit here in Jacksonville, and when they clog, water finds the studs instead.
- The lock no longer catches: On CWS cam locks, the keeper plate or the cam itself wears out of alignment, usually because a bad balance forced the sash to sit crooked for months. A window that won’t lock is a window that is not keeping anyone out.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here in Jacksonville, a CWS sash replacement, including the new IGU, hardware transfer, and labor, usually lands between $400 and $700 per opening. Full-frame replacement, where we pull the existing CWS frame entirely and set a new window in a flashed and sealed opening, runs $850 to $1,400 per opening depending on size, glass performance, and whether we are matching impact-rated product. Larger picture windows and custom sizes push the top end.
What matters more than the number is what it covers. Every estimate from us is a written line-item price before any work starts, so you see the part cost, the labor, the sealant, and the disposal listed separately. No change orders waiting at the end of the job. Every replacement is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the finished work is not right, we make it right, no debate. On the window itself, the manufacturer’s warranty applies to the glass and hardware, and we document everything in writing when we hand you the invoice.
DIY or Call Us?
For CWS windows, there are a few things an owner can safely check: tilt the sash in and read the sticker, shoot us a photo of the label and the failed part, and check whether the window closes squarely in the frame. That information lets us give you a tighter estimate over the phone before the job.
What we do not recommend is swapping balances or the IGU yourself. CWS balance systems in the 5500 and 8000 lines are spring-loaded, and releasing one improperly can send a metal shoe through the vinyl frame or into a hand. The glass units are heavy, and a dropped IGU on a tile floor is a bad afternoon. Our technicians carry the right replacement parts on the truck, wear shoe covers and lay drop cloths before the work starts, and leave with a photo of the clean-up. Call (904) 914-3691 and we will walk through what you are seeing before anyone comes out.
FAQs
Most CWS windows in our area last 15 to 20 years before the first meaningful failure shows up, whether that is a seal, a balance, or a frame warp, with coastal homes trending shorter because salt air works the hardware and sealants harder than inland humidity does. Scheduling hardware replacement at the first sign of wear extends the glass life significantly.
If the frame is solid and the failure is in the balance, pivot bar, or tilt latch, we repair it on the spot with the correct CWS-compatible part, usually for under $150. If the glass seal has failed or the frame has rotted at the sill, replacement is the honest answer. Call (904) 914-3691 and describe what you are seeing, and we will tell you which one it is before we schedule a visit.
A sash or hardware replacement typically takes 30 to 60 minutes per window. A full-frame replacement runs two to three hours per opening including tear-out, flashing, sealing, and the final interior trim reset. We protect the floors and furniture with drop cloths, and we clean up before we leave, every time.
We stock the most common CWS balances, pivot bars, tilt latches, and cam locks on the truck for the 5500 and 8000 Series, and we keep replacement weatherstripping and sealant for all CWS lines. Impact-rated 9500 glass units and full sashes are ordered against your window’s Florida product approval number and typically arrive within one to two weeks.
